How do you imagine a corrosion protection system after 5 years since application? It`s intact and efficient!

 

What is the project about?

 

The project was based on applying a corrosion protection system for two tanks of bioethanol. Their height is 16.5 m and a diameter of 16 m.

Because of the small distance between the location of the tanks and the rivers Schwinge and Elbe,  the North Sea also, the air is humid and saline. This accelerates the corrosion of steel.

 

 

Project development

 

The installation of the tanks lasted a few weeks. This was caused by salt air, the metal surface beeing strongly affected by corrosion. Blasting needed to be performed accurately and as quickly as possible..

Protection systems used for external applications 

 

Primer

Ceramic-Polymer STP is a two pack ceramic composite coating with specific epoxy matrix and active corrosion inhibitive pigments, which increase the combined effects of the coating additives. This product can be applied as a primer or as a stand- alone system and provides:

·         Excellent corrosion protection

·         High impact and abrasion resistance

·         Very good adhesion

·         1-coat system

·         Completion of ISO standard 12944-2 / Class C4 & C5

 

Top Coat

Proguard 169 is a highly cross-linked 2-component polyurethane top layer with outstanding performance and durability characteristics. It provides excellent physical properties:

·         Extreme UV-stability and weather resistance

·         Excellent resistance against abrasion

·         High chemical resistance

·         1-coat system, fast curing

·         Completion of ISO standard 12944-2 / Class C4 & C5 (strong resistance for industrial sectors, onshore and offshore areas in aggressive and saline environments)

Visual inspection of the  tanks: after five years since application, the corrosion protection system is intact. The outer surfaces  shows no damage  from the weather or corrosion.

 

In both reservoirs, the interior was protected with Proguard CN 200. This system with ceramic particles ensure lasting corrosion protection by using a single layer. Having a very good chemical resistance is the best solution secondary protective barrier
