Food & Beverage Epoxy Industrial Flooring

Unlike other industries, when choosing floors in the food processing industry must take into account the final consumer`s  safety first.

If in light industrial production areas, where are not involved consumables, uncovered concrete floors can be a perfectly acceptable choice, but cleanliness and hygiene of the surfaces in the food industry are extremely important.

The floors in food processing plants are usually exposed to a range of elements including fats, oils, hot, blood, solutions of food acids, sugar solutions, detergents, alkalis. Some of these substances can cause significant damage over time because of their corrosive nature. In addition, if you choose a concrete floor without coverage, these impurities can easily seep into cracks, leading to uncontrolled development of bacteria.

The adopted corrosion protection must be strong enough to be able to create a effective  protective barrier in preventing contamination, in the same time respecting all European regulations on hygiene and health.

Epoxy resins - an effective solution

Coating systems based on epoxy resins have been developed to meet a wide range of operating conditions, taken according to the user requirements, in complex corrosion protection systems.

Epoxy resins offers outstanding protection against acids and alkalis. Furthermore, epoxy resin shows high resistance to abrasive and chemicals cleaning. Although the strengthening of the epoxy layer is fast, it shows a very good adhesion to the substrate.

The traffic recorded in the area is another important criterion in choosing floor substrate. Along with resistance to heavy traffic volume, the floor must provide a suitable texture that would provide slip resistance, so as to ensure safety and staff (the texture is usually determined by operating conditions, frequency of cleaning, and the presence of possible slippery substances).

Another factor that is not usually considered in choosing a corrosion protection system is the smell or odor transfer that can take place.  Corrosion protection systems based on epoxy resin shows a low probability to absorb odors and this criteria makes an excellent choice for application in the processing plants.

Coroflake 650 FDA  epoxy resin

A good choice that meets all the conditions imposed by the food industry is  Coroflake 650 FDA, the two component epoxy resin which shows agrementation from German Technical and Scientific Institute of use in food, pharmaceutical and beverage.

Coroflake 650 FDA has a high degree of polymerization and shows excellent resistance to chemicals. It is recommended especially for corrosion protection of steel and concrete components exposed to drinking water, process water and waste water.

We recommend using the epoxy resin systems and due to high resistance to thermal and mechanical shocks and resilience to frequent cleaning with high pressure hot water. Such production areas can function uninterruptedly without aplllying for a special ventilation requirements, humidity or temperature.

Another advantage conferred by this type of corrosion protection is the easy application,  without requiring difficult operational processes. Coroflake 650 FDA epoxy resin can be applied by spraying, and for small areas it can be applied using a brush or a roller. Each dried layer of epoxy is recommended to measure about 0.15 mm. Ambient temperature must be at least 130 C to 400 C and substrate temperature must be at least 100 C (3 K above dew point).

But before applying epoxy resin system, we recommend special attention to the preparation process of the support on which will be applied the corrosion protection, this having a direct effect on the durability and strength of the substrate. We recommend making a sanding (wet or dry) so as to be removed any remaining, substances or artificial contamination on the surface, so be obtained a perfectly flat surface, adhesion and free of impurities or defects.

Along with the production areas of the food and beverage industry, Coroflake 650 FDA can be applied in any field that involves the use of tanks and water storage tanks, in pulp and paper production or in areas of chemical industry.
