Use of nanotechnology in corrosion protection industry

 

Corrosion protection plays an important role in extending the life cycle of equipment and installations present in the industrial sector. Thus, by increasing the reliability index and decreasing the number of maintenance actions, the budget, including unanticipated expenditures, is minimized.

Researchers from  ICST (Institute for Color Science and Technology Iran) are developing actions to improve the quility of anticorrosive products, by inserting nanoparticles. Results will significantly reduce losses caused by corrosion in many technology segments, including power plants, oil tanks, marine installations, installations for gas and oil, etc.

The soution in avoiding corrosion issues is provided by application of nanoparticles of zinc oxide in combination with manganese and cobalt.

Dr. Bahram Ramezanzadeh, member of the Scientific Department of ICST, referring to the research that is done in this area, says: „In this research, we tried to develop a new method of preventing corrosion problems using nanoparticles of zinc oxide, adding cobalt and mangnesium. In addition, the surface was modified with a silicate agent for obtaining optimal distribution of nanoparticles in the epoxy substance".

After testing the product in the laboratories  in the Institute, the nanocomposite substance can be used as an anti-corrosive agent for steel structures, neutralizing chemical agents that act on the surface, weather, etc. This methos extends equipment life cycle, by excluding the possibility of reaction to the metal surface. The results can be written in terms of efficiency and cost reduction.

Based on the same integration technology of  special microparticles, the polimer ceramic products achieve the pozition of high performance coating with excellent chemical and abrasion resistence. Fillings based nano-particles act as anchor to tighten the substrate particles,  increasing resistance inner texture.
